London Weighting + up to 28 days’ annual leave + 10% pension contribution Based in ECRE’s London Secretariat The European Council on Refugees and Exiles (ECRE) is a dynamic network of 78 refugee-assisting non-governmental organisations in 30 European countries working to promote the right to asylum for refugees. ECRE campaigns on behalf of its membership for humane and fair asylum policies and contributes to the development of comprehensive responses to global refugee problems. ECRE seeks a Head of Policy & Advocacy to provide strategic leadership of our policy, legal, advocacy and media activities to influence the European asylum debate. As a member of the Senior Management Team, you will also play a key role in overseeing the overall strategic and corporate management of ECRE as the organisation embarks on a review of its structures. You will take responsibility for ensuring the effective planning, co-ordination and implementation of activities in the Policy & Advocacy department and linking of activities across the organisation. You will ensure the quality and strategic merit of the department’s activities and publications and represent us at the highest level of the policy community. You will undertake management of departmental budgets and ensure necessary fundraising initiatives are taken to achieve the objectives of the department. You will have experience of successfully performing in the key functions of policy and/or advocacy and good overall knowledge and understanding of principles in the areas of advocacy, researching and developing policy, legal and media work. Your experience and knowledge will have been gained in a refugee-related context. An understanding of the key role of member organisations in a network is essential and more broadly of the various requirements of effective advocacy at a national and European level. An excellent communicator with fluent written and spoken English, you will have well developed organisational, representational and financial/strategic planning skills. You will have the ability to lead and plan the work of others to achieve agreed objectives with a supportive approach to problem-solving. Strong inter-personal skills in directing, managing and developing a small team of specialist professional staff are essential along with the ability to work co-operatively with others in the organisation. A working knowledge of another European language is desirable. The post is based in London but the individual will be required to travel to other areas of Europe. The level of responsibility makes the position ideal for someone looking to broaden their skills and help shape and take forward the organisation’s agenda. The post is offered on a fixed-term contract until 31 December 2005 after which, following a planned organisational review, it will be re-advertised. The post would be suitable for a secondment.
